There are some top hotels in Jamaica that still has this amazing and magical vibe of yesteryear, - and as a result the decor and ambiance is what I call "modernized old world glamour."
My design inspiration for comparing the old style to the modern version of this look is a famous Decorator, the
legendary Decorator Sister Parish. After purchasing the book her daughter and granddaughter wrote about her named
Sister, I fell in love with her work and her life story and was so inspired by this strong, willful, witty and hugely gifted lady! I am sure she is the reason why so many people went into interior design over the years. She started the very successful Design Firm, Parish-Hadley Inc. (with the iconic Albert Hadley) and today her work continues through her talented granddaughter, Susan Bartlett Crater, with the Fab Interior Design Company
Sister Parish Design.
This modernized "old world glamour" is one of my fave looks in hotels and homes today and so I have compared the original inspiration to what now translates to the modern version:
 |
| One of Sister Parish's bedrooms in her cottage in Maine - the four poster bed and canopy is the inspiration. Via Architectural Digest. |
 |
| One of the rooms in the Villas at Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios - a modern take on a traditional look - a Mahogany four poster bed casually draped with white cotton fabric. |
 |
| A watercolor of Sister Parish's Terrace at her home in Maine - love the use of trellis, wicker, green Adirondack chairs. Source |
Who is your Design Inspiration? Do you like the modern or traditional style of decorating?
Thanks for sharing those pictures, I especially like the room with the white fabric draping from the bed. Makes me want to take a vacation!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Deirdre!
DeleteLove that pic too, it is of one of the Villas at Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios. They just renovated the villas, and they are exquisite. Hope you get to Jamaica soon!
All the best, Jeanine
I will have to leave the designing once I move into the home with my husband to an interior decorator. I am fine with details of dressing myself and stuff like that, but my home design (with the exception of my self created room turned closet) are not very creative. I do have to say, from this post, I think I'm a mixture of modern and older as far as what I like.
ReplyDeleteHi Joi,
ReplyDeleteYes modern is quite lovely too - or a nice mix of modern with a little traditional! Wow, you have a room turned closet, I am jealous, we have an extra room and I am seriously considering doing that :-)
Ooh I love the Villas picture too. I can totally see myself lounging on that bed reading a good book and listening to the ocean! Wonderful. I have no sense of design... I am terrible at it!! But I love looking at the beautiful pics of what others have done!
ReplyDeleteHi Kat,
DeleteHave you seen the Get Happy in Jamaica special promotion going on right now? Many hotels now have free nights that they have offered in the rates - quite a nice deal. I love the all white room at Jamaica Inn, it really is just as beautiful to see!
